Description The Garand, Model M-1 rifle is considered by many historians to be the most important rifle ever invented. Developed at the United States Armory here in Springfield by John Garand, the semi-automatic gave American soldiers in World War II a decided advantage in firepower over enemy forces using bolt-action rifles. Over the four years of the war more than 3.5 million M-1s were manufactured by the Springfield Armory, one of the greatest industrial accomplishments of the era.
