Title Rydal Falls, Lake District, England
Object ID GWVS-1.23.43
Object Name Painting
Description Rydal Falls is in the Lake District of England. As a young man Kensett spent seven years studying art in England, France, and Italy. Then in 1856, as an established Hudson River School landscape painter, he returned for a brief time to England expressly to make "the lake scenery of England, Ireland and Scotland the special object of my visit." He executed numerous drawings there despite bad weather. "Rain! Rain! Rain! Having exhausted prayer and supplication for fine weather I am convinced the elements are against me," he complained. Kensett used his sketches from this 1856 trip to paint Rydal Falls in 1858.
