Title Gibraltar
Object ID GWVS-1.23.27
Object Name Painting
Description "I am hard at work on my Spanish subjects, Spanish castles, Spanish skies, Spanish ships, etc.," wrote American landscape artist Samuel Colman from Paris in 1861, where he was busy painting pictures based on the drawings he had made in Spain the year before. Even after his return to America that fall, he continued to paint Spanish subjects. This 1866 view of Gibraltar, a British outpost in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain, shows the dramatic northwest side of the famous rock, its surface pockmarked with gun emplacements. Through a low haze Colman's massive rock looms over an active harbor full of many types of boats.
