Edwin L. Knight was born in Brimfield on January 25, 1839. He was mustered into the United States Service, June 21 1861 as First Sergeant of Company E of the Massachusetts 10th. His promotions included Second Lieutenant July 21, 1862, Company G; Captain, January 1, 1863, Company E. He was severely wounded on his left side during the Battle of Spottslvania,VA on May 12, 1864. After serving his full three years of service, he was mustered out on July 21, 1864 as Brevet Major and returned to Springfield to work first for his father's plumbing business and later at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company.
