Title Windsor Castle
Object ID GWVS-1.73.1
Object Name Painting
Description Gifford sketched Windsor Castle, an important summer home for the English royal family, during his first trip abroad in 1855. From these studies he later painted several views of the castle, exploring the quality of light at different times of day. Here he captured the hazy atmosphere and glowing color of early morning. Instead of emphasizing the castle's bulk or looming presence in the landscape, Gifford practically dissolved it in misty light, creating a magical vision hovering at the horizon.
