The Howard Family Collection consists of one document case of correspondence, biographical and genealogical essays, photographs, and ephemera from the Howard and Hayward families. Most of the material pertains to the seven daughters of Charles Howard (1794-1875) and his second wife Elizabeth Buckminster Dwight Howard (1801-1855): Lucinda Orne Howard (1825-1899); Elizabeth Bridge Howard Tiffany (1828-1900, aka Mrs. W. S. Tiffany); Sophia Worthington Howard (1831-1920); Catharine Lathrop Howard (1833-1897); Mary Dwight Howard Andrews (1835-1904, aka Mrs. Alexander E. Andrews); Sarah Bancroft Howard Hayward (1838-1922, aka Mrs. James W. Hayward); and Emily Williams Howard (1840-1923). Catharine Howard was well-known as the founder of the Catharine L. Howard School, a school for girls in Springfield, Mass. Her sister Sophia was one of the teachers in Catharine's school. Of special note are: a lengthy biographical essay on Lucinda Orne Howard which contains many details of daily life in the Howard household; correspondence (much of it transcribed) discussing births, deaths, and illnesses in the Howard and Hayward families; and an inventory of furnishings in the Howard home at 99 School Street, Springfield, which not only lists the items but gives the history of each item and information about people associated with it. Williams (a cousin) to Charles Howard concerning death of his wife, Elizabeth B. Dwight Howard; * original condolence letter and typed copy from Mrs. Bliss to Lucinda Howard concerning the death of her mother, Elizabeth B. Dwight Howard; * original and typed copy of Emily Howard's account of her mother; * other letters and information concerning Howard and Hayward family members--copies of originals.
