Scope & Content |
The David Allen Reed Papers consist of papers from Reed Realty Trust, its subsidiaries and clients, and both personal and business papers of David Allen Reed and his family. David Allen Reed (1850-1932) was the founding pastor of Hope Church in Springfield and founder of the School for Christian Workers, which later became Springfield College. Reed also served as treasurer for the Duryea Motor Wagon Company and was a primary stockholder for that company in the late 19th century. The Reed family was involved in real estate development in Springfield through Reed Realty Trust and its subsidiary corporations, Winchester Square Realty Co., and Edgewood Estates Inc. (a.k.a. Edgewood Farms, Inc.). Business papers of Reed Realty Trust make up the bulk of the collection, but the collection also includes personal and business papers of David Allen Reed, his wife, Gratia Rebecca Chapin Reed, their children, John Chapin Reed, Clara Stillman Reed, and David Allen Reed, Jr., and Mrs. Reed's father, Marvin Chapin. As Reed Realty Trust was a family business, some of the business records for the family and the company overlap. Records of particular relevance to Springfield history include a file of correspondence and legal papers concerning Reed Realty Trust's property at Acorn and Cortland streets, which was taken by the City in the 1920s for a proposed park, and was later used for Victory Garden plots during World War II. Additional materials added to the collection in 2002 include three document cases of personal papers and one document case of papers pertaining to Hope Congregational Church. The personal papers consist mainly of late 19th-century correspondence between David Allen Reed and a variety of friends, teachers, and Reed family members. Also included are biographical and historical materials, such as newspaper clippings. The Hope Church materials include correspondence to David Allen Reed as pastor of Hope Church and ephemera related to Hope Church anniversaries and other special events. An additional donation of materials has been added to this collection as Series 8 (Photographs), Series 9 (general) and Series 10 (John C Reed Diaries). It can be found under accession HA-2023-0022. The entire collection and additions were processed and added to PastPerfect in 2023. The collections of Clara Stillman Reed and Howard Fay Reed were also created, separated from the main collection, and processed. |
