This scrapbook contains newspaper clippings about Springfield's history, many of them from the "Forgotten Facts About Springfield" column. Some describe and/or depict Springfield before its incorporation, i.e., the old poor house, Parson's Tavern, the hanging of convicted murderer William Shaw on Armory Hill in 1770. Many images of local businesses, schools, churches, banks, municipal buildings, and street scenes. Illustrations and photographs of natural disasters (the blizzard of 1888, flood of 1936), an 1873 fire at the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance building, the Glendower fire of 1893. One clipping about the Springfield Water Cure. Several photos of the Springfield Bicycle Club. One personal item is a newspaper photograph and brief update on Harry N. Squire, son of Mrs. Edith M. Squire of 24 High Street, who enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1940. |
