Description |
Columbia brand tandem bicycle When most people think of "tandem" bicycles, they think tandem is a reference to how many people ride the bicycle - two. In fact tandem actually refers to the seat placement on such a bike - fore to aft, or front to back. There are other "bicycles built for two"; those with their seats installed side by side are called "sociables" since that seating arrangemnt allows riders to converse face to face! A review of vintage Columbia bicycle advertisements and several bicycle collectors' sites reinforce the thought that this bicycle dates from the early 1960s. The horizontal crossbar or top tube runs straight across, a feature of the Columbia tandem frames of the early 1960s. Columbia tandems of the late 1960s - early 1970s feature a slanted crossbar. This Twosome appears to retain its original seats, paint, handlebar grips and hand brake. It also retains its decal and badge reflecting its manufacture in Westfield, Massachusetts. |
