Presentation Sword, 1909 Ames Manufacturing Co., Chicopee, MA Presented to Theodor Robert Geisel (1879 - 1968) Grand Army of The Republic FAIR Presentation Sword made by the Ames Sword Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. This is a gilt presentation quality sword patterned after the U.S. Model 1902 sword for all officers. The blade is etched with gilt-filled strap work and inscribed: "G.A.R. FAIR 1909" in a reserve panel. The ricasso is etched "Ames Sword Co./Chicopee, Mass". The nickel-plated scabbard is engraved with a Federal eagle and shield, and is fitted with cast gilt mounts. Gilt braid sword knot attached. This sword belonged to Theodor Robert Geisel (1879-1968) father of Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Theodor R. Geisel served in the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia from 1904 to 1919. His duty assignments included: Com 1st Lt. Inspector Rifle Practice, Nov. 10, 1904; Captain Apr 12, 1906. Reorganization Capt. Ordnance Dept. Nov. 15, 1906 to rank from Apr 12, 1906; Honorably discharged Jan. 30, 1908. Retired. Captain Ordnance Dept. Regimental Adjutant 2nd Inf. Oct 13, 1910 to rank from May 25, 1908. Honorably discharged Apr 21, 1913. resigned from M.N.G. Mass. State Guard: Major and Adjutant 3rd Brigade Sept 15, 1917. Honorably discharged May 24, 1919. Retirement. |
